I have always enjoyed Valentine’s Day, even when I was single. Especially the day afterward when all the candy goes on sale! It sounds so cliché and trite but my relationship status has never determined my mood when V-Day comes around and the distasteful bitterness some people express about the holiday really annoys me. I think it’s actually gotten worse thanks to social media and it really stinks that people can’t just let others be happy but instead seek to tear others down because of their envy and unhappiness. I acknowledge the criticisms about Valentine’s Day though. Yes we can all recognize that Valentine’s Day is a Hallmark holiday and no it shouldn’t be the only day you show someone you love them by adorning them with material things. On the other hand, it’s really not that serious and if Valentine’s Day is the one day you want to do all of those things for a special someone you love and care about then by all means do so!
This year for Valentines Day I’ll be in Philly with two of my college girlfriends. I haven’t had an all girls Valentine’s Day, or Galentine’s Day rather (if you watch Parks and Recreation you’ll know what this is), since college so I’m really looking forward to brunch, wine, chocolates, chick flicks, girl talk, and whatever else may come over the weekend! I’m sure at some point I’ll give them manicures which I always end up doing when we all get together. Speaking of manicures, here are my Valentines Day nails!
I wanted to do something really simple so I went with a polka dot design and used Essie Adore-a-bll and Recessionista.
Adore-a-ball, a sheer soft pink which reminds me of a mix between Mademoiselle and Tuck It In My Tux, is the base I used for this manicure. It is extremely sheer and took three coats to get to bottle color however as most sheers it is extremely streaky. For the look I used three coats however I could have definitely gone for one more coat in hopes of evening out the polish and streakiness. You can’t see it in the photo but to the naked eye it is streaky and I can still see the whites of my fingertips which I dislike. For the dots I used Essie Recessionista, a dark red polish that leans to mulberry and looks more purple than red to my eye. I will do a post on Recessionista so you see what the polish looks like beyond two small polka dots. I decided to go with a sheer and reddish-purple rather than the standard pink and/or red for Valentine’s Day. Plus this way I can wear the look the entire week!
