Although I’ve never been a fan of matte nail polish, I was very excited to hear about the Essie Cashmere Matte Collection. Get the matte look without having to struggle with sometimes tacky and streaky matte nail polish top coats? Okay bring it on! Well…not really. My experience with a couple of polishes from this Collection was not what I had hoped. The colors are really beautiful but the formula is not easy to work with at all and is more trouble than it’s worth. Yes I did get that smooth semi-satin and soft finish that I really like about the matte look but that wasn’t enough to offset the downsides of the polishes.
Essie Cashmere Matte – All Eyes On Nude
I thought I’d like All Eyes On Nude, a camel-hued neutral tone, because I’m frequently drawn to that specific shade but the matte finish of the polish left me feeling underwhelemed. The polish made my fingers look ashy which I was/ am not a fan of. I much preferred the finish I got when I used a top coat. I was able to get to bottle color with two coats. All Eyes On Nude popped with a shiny top coat and in the future I’ll likely wear this polish with a top coat as it looks much better this way than as a matt
Essie Cashmere Matte Collection – Comfy in Cashmere
Of the three polishes I tried from the Matte Collection, Comfy in Cashmere ended up being my favorite. It is a matte mauve with velvet undertones and went on much smoother than all eyes on nude although I did experience a bit of tackiness and streakiness. I do not believe I have a polish of this color in my collection, it is pretty unique. Comfy in Cashmere looks good as a matte finish as well as with a top coat and honestly I don’t know which one I’d prefer over the other. I was able to get to bottle color with two coats and because this polish is a tad darker, the streaks were less visible. The color of the polish definitely won me over more than the formula and I definitely see myself returning to this polish come September.
Essie Cashmere Matte Collection – Wrap Me Up
Last but not least, well maybe, is Wrap Me Up. Other than All Eyes On Nude, this is the polish in the Collection that I was excited to try. Finding a good white/ off-white nail polish isn’t easy and even though Wrap Me Up is described as a whisper soft pink, to my eye it’s off-white. As with the other two polishes, the formula is thick, streaky, clumpy, and does not spread smoothly on the nail. I was able to get to bottle with two coats however I used three because the streaks were visible with just two coats. So much for finding a good white polish but this could very well end up being a polish you end up using for nail designs and I really like the color so why not?
Overall this isn’t the best collection that Essie has come out with. The colors are nice, nothing to write home about except for Comfy in Cashmere, but what really does this polish in is the formula. Although it lives up to it’s purpose, all the polishes indeed have a matte finish, the formula is not at all easy to work with and for a polish so expensive you’d definitely want to get your money’s worth.
Have any of y’all tried the Matte Collection? If so, what did you think about it?
